There must have been times last year when Zara Phillips wished her husband Mike Tindall would keep a low profile.

Last night, however, she was all smiles as the England rugby player became the centre of attention at the World Darts Championship.

The 33-year-old maintained his reputation as one of the lads by turning up at the final at London’s Alexandra Palace in fancy dress alongside Zara, 30.

Wearing a pinstriped hat, oversized glassed and a comedy beard, Tindall was almost unrecognisable as he took his seat among the crowd of 2,500.

He was joining in what has become a tradition at the championships for fans to wear fancy dress.

But if Tindall thought that the comedy outfit would keep him hidden, he was wrong.

Even though darts has been traditionally seen as a working-class pastime, it is not the first time that it has received the royal seal of approval – Prince Harry attended last year.

Tindall and his wife have had a turbulent few months in their relationship since they married in Edinburgh at the end of July.

During the rugby World Cup in New Zealand, footage emerged of Tindall flirting with a blonde friend at a Queenstown resort.
