He's mainly been seen on TV screens and on theatre stages over the last few years but Jonny Lee Miller is galloping his way back on to the big screen.

The actor dons a chivalrous outfit as he rides horse back for his new role opposite Gemma Arterton in vampire flick Byzantium.

And he seems to be taking to the role as he trots along a beach while helping a fellow young actress on to the horse.

The Trainspotting star is filming scenes for the upcoming thriller in Dublin, Ireland.

And he's thrown himself into the role, wearing a period costume, complete with white leggings and boots.

The 39-year-old has obviously been practising his equestrian skills as he looked comfortable riding across the sand for the shoot.

Jonny may be playing a chivalrous role in the Neil Jordan movie, but he's also demonstrated his nobility off camera.

As he prepared to get into character to shoot the latest clips he helped a young actress, who was wearing a pink dress with a white petticoat, on to the horse to sit in front of him.

The pair seemed to struggle at first but then laughed as she finally managed to join him on the horse back.

Earlier this week his co-star in the film, Gemma Arterton, was also spotted getting into character as the female lead.

The former Bond girl is playing a vampire in the project who moves to a small British town along with what could be her sister or daughter, played by Saoirse Ronan.

The mysterious tale is adapted from Moira Buffini's play A Vampire Story, which was commissioned in 2008 by London's National Theatre.

Arterton was spotted on a well-deserved cigarette break still in full make-up showing her with a bloodied face.

And she too has thrown herself into the part, revealing that she spent six days a week in the gym for a month to get into the vampire fighting spirit.

'She’s brittle and she’s a fighter,' she tells the Daily Mail's Baz Bamigboye, adding: 'There’s blood and vampires and all of that, but we focus on the mother-daughter relationship.'

And she's relieved she can finally act using her native accent for the film because the film is set in Hastings, near where she grew up in Gravesend, Kent, saying her vampire role is 'from the hood'.

Jonny is also currently filming a new movie with Tim Burton called Dark Shadows, opposite Johnny Depp, Eva Green and Michelle Pfeiffer.
