Who wears lace with grace? On Kate it was the epitome of glamour, but it's a look that can easily go horribly wrong

Stepping out in floor-length black lace can be risky - you don’t want to end up looking like a human doily.
But when the Duchess of Cambridge hit the red carpet in a demure yet dramatic Temperley gown at the film premiere of War Horse on Sunday night, she triumphed again.
The dress was a bold choice for Kate - the scalloped neckline plunged provocatively and the nude underlay gave the impression of flesh beneath.
She wears it well: The Duchess of Cambridge oozed glamour on the red carpet with this demure yet dramatic Temperley gown when she attended the premiere of War Horse
But combined with the bracelet-length sleeves (a hot trend for spring) and full-length sweeping skirt, the flash of decolletage seemed just right for the red carpet occasion.
Kate’s gorgeous glossy hair and pared-down accessories also stopped her from looking too formal, and kept the ensemble fresh and modern.
But for every lace hit, there’s a faux-pas, as the stars featured here prove.
The secret seems to be to choose a dress in a simple cut, which doesn’t detract from your figure, and team it with minimal accessories and unfussy hair. It’s a formula the style-savvy Duchess sticks to every time - with stunning results.
THOSE WHO GOT IT RIGHT...
GWYNETH PALTROW: This could be too covered up - if it wasn't wasn't for her toned, tanned midriff
EMMA WATSON: onle the gamine and gorgeous could pull off such a skimpy feathered frock
CLAUDIA SCHIFFER: The long fishtail transforms this corseted gown into stunning eveningwear
ANNE HATHAWAY: Her retro waves and red lips stop this dress looking too 'bridal'
KRISTIN DAVIS: This gown with its distinctive pattern and flowing skirt is simple yet dramatic
TULISA: A super shade of jade, and the short hemline is balanced out by long sleeves
MYLEENE KLASS: Lady-like and demure with a great figure-flattering shape
SCARLETT JOHANSSON: Simple, streamlined number that hugs her in all the right places
AND THOSE WHO GOT IT VERY WRONG...
CHER: This 'mullet' dress is too low-cut, looks like a Gothic tattoo and is worn with fishnets
J-LO: This fishtail, high-neck, one-shoulder gown has too many trends
CHERYL COLE: A one-shouldered disaster of animal print and sequins
SARAH JESSICA PARKER: Too much flesh, and more gypsy wedding than red carpet
STELLA McCARTNEY: This bold jumpsuit is incredibly unflattering
LILY COLE: This shiny, high-neck gown makes her look like a trussed-up Quality Street sweet
KATY PERRY: Nice colour, but the panel around her knees looks ridiculous
DANNII MINOGUE: This sheer red number looks more like a hideous skin disorder
