Bright hues and bold statements rule as stars show their fashion daring at Teen Choice Awards
From colour-blocking leather to mullet hemlines, there were plenty of fashion risks at last night's event. But while expensive stylists and designer clothes should ensure they paid off, the results were a style lottery...

With fashion-forward stars such as Blake Lively and Rachel Bilson in attendance, the fashion bar was high at last night's Teen Choice Awards. And it seems plenty had made efforts to keep up with the style set.
Summer's hottest trends remained popular choices, from ethereal nudes and whites to colour-blocking in rainbow brights.
Cat Deeley did Matthew Williamson proud in his aqua lace minidress, while Blake Lively's bold choice of an orange leather Gucci shift proved that she's as much fashionista off-screen as on. Elizabeth bnks echoed the trend in a red leather J Mendel dress with ruffles and a racer back.

But Kourtney Kardashian was the only one of her sisters to score a real style winner in a mullet-hem Blaque Label dress. Kim's Givenchy ostrich feather number was too fussy, and seemed to be wearing her rather than the other way around, while Khloe's Roberto Cavalli kaftan was more beachwear than eveningwear.
A safer look, that was almost universally successful was the little white dress. Taylor Swift's Rafael Cennamo dress could have done without the sparkly waistband, but the halter neckline and full skirt made for a pretty Fifties silhouette.
Maggie Q and Rachel Bilson's take on the look was a little edgier, both actresses experimenting with contrasting textures.
Rachel's Chloe dress with fabric petals clustering around the neckline, was toughened up by Brian Atwood studded shoe-boots - a smart choice that saved it from looking too bridesmaid-y, while Maggie wore a Maxmara bodysuit and skirt with Aperlai courts.

Monochrome: Ashley Greene's Givenchy dress (left) proved a better choice than Kim Kardashian's (centre), which was too fussy with its snake belt and ostrich skirt. Raven Symone's was another disappointment (right). The blazer and white tank made her look like she was going to the office, and the sheer hosiery was the wrong hue
Ashley Greene's Givenchy dress was another take on the LWD theme, with a simple white top half giving way to a sleek black pencil skirt beneath. Gladiator-style sandals and a slender gold belt were all the embellishment she needed, so the Twilight star kept her hair simple and jewellery to a minimum. Kim Kardashian would have looked stunning in a similarly understated piece from the collection.
Raven Symone's monochrome look was another disappointment. Though she had clearly tried to follow trends with the harem trousers and the platform shoes, the blazer and white tank made her look like she was going to the office, not a high-profile awards do. And the sheer hosiery should be left to the Duchess of Cambridge.
But at least she didn't play it too safe like Cameron Diaz, whose Burak Uyan shoes failed to make her strapless beige dress any more interesting. Kylie Jenner's was also on the dull side, the dun palette needed a lift in the form of a bright bag or heels.
Taupe and black, it seems, is a far more eye-catching combination as demonstrated by Pretty Little Liars' Troian Bellisario and Lucy Hale, who teamed her sparkly Cengiz Abazoğlu dress with gravity-defying heel-less Giuseppe Zanotti heels
Muted hues: Taupe and black was an eye-catching combination on Pretty Little Liars' Troian Bellisario (left) and Lucy Hale (second left) who teamed her Cengiz Abazoğlu dress with heel-less Giuseppe Zanotti heels. Cameron Diaz (centre right) and Kylie Jenner (far right) could have benefited from some colour to lift their looks
Dramatic details: Kat Graham (left) in a Falguni & Shane Peacock dress, and Selena Gomez (second left) in Erin Fetherston both had floor-skimming features on their short frocks. Kaley Cuoco (centre right) wore Rebecca Taylor's shimmering tiered gown, while Josie Loren's high neck and sleeves kept her dress sophisticated
The fashion went downhill from there though, and Joan Rivers looks set to have a field day with Tyra Banks and Demi Lovato, whose red carpet looks were among the evening's low points.
Demi's white lace dress with yellow piping did nothing for her figure, the mullet hem train was too short and not full enough, and her shoes failed to co-ordinate with the hue of the dress.
Tyra, in turn, appeared to have taken her style lead from a bumblebee in a black and yellow leather bodysuit. Though the former model has a body to be proud of, the garment was too racy with its zip detail, and as it was too long in the leg, creased uncomfortably at the knee and the ankle.
Yellow fever: Demi Lovato (left) wore a white lace dress with yellow piping that did nothing for her figure; Tyra Banks appeared to be taking her style lead from a bumblebee in her racy bodysuit (centre) and Fergie failed at the star trend in OTT Dolce & Gabbana (right)
Not so charming prints (from left): AnnaSophia Robb's Catherine Malandrino dress looked a little ordinary; Zooey Deschanel's floral Alice & Olivia dress was not formal enough; Nikki Reed looked like she was wearing a giant scarf in her Etro gown; Khloe Kardashian's Roberto Cavalli kaftan was more beachwear than eveningwear
Prints proved to be poor choices too.Though stars are set to be next season's most popular motif thanks to Dolce & Gabbana, the Black Eyed Peas' Fergie appeared to have found a piece in the label's collection that was more fancy dress than fashion-forward.
Nikki Reed looked like she was wearing a giant scarf in her Etro gown, while AnnaSophia Robb's Catherine Malandrino dress looked a little ordinary with her courts and ponytail.
And Zooey Deschanel, who is usually a stalwart of the best dressed lists also managed a fashion fail. A floral Alice & Olivia dress was not formal enough for the occasion - something in a single colour with more slender straps might have been a more fitting choice.
Fun with fashion: While Zoe Saldana's Lanvin dress appeared to have been made out of tinfoil, she seemed to be having a ball, which redeemed the entire look
Most surprising, though, was Zoe Saldana, who rarely disappoints on the red carpet. The fabric of her Lanvin dress, with its pleats, made it look like tinfoil, and the tiered sections were reminiscent of cheap beachwear. The rope and leather belt also seemed at odds with the metallic finish.
Having said that, the Avatar star appeared to be delighted by the swingy skirt of the gown - her smile said it all. And while her sartorial risk may not have paid off, she was clearly having a ball. Which, as many might argue, is actually what fashion should be all about.
